Our highly trained physical, occupational and speech-language therapists specialize in providing rehabilitative treatment and care for all types of injuries and disorders, whether the goal is restoring function after a minor injury or recovery after serious injury or disease. Conditions that often require rehabilitation include cognitive or neuromuscular disorders, orthopedic conditions or injuries, burns, spine disorders, sports injuries, and recovery from surgery, as well as problems with hearing, speaking, and swallowing. Our goal is to help patients regain lost function, be as independent as possible, and prevent future injury. We provide seamless coordination of care for patients with a full spectrum of Brown University Health health care experts including nurses, doctors, surgeons and behavioral health care providers.

Occupational therapists help patients become as independent as possible in performing daily tasks such as eating, drinking, dressing, bathing, cooking, reading, writing, and toileting. They may also help with splints or orthotics, or with specific tasks such as getting into a car from a wheelchair, eating using a nondominant hand, negotiating stairs, and reaching into cupboards for dishes. They also assess an injured employee’s capacity to return to work.

Speech-language pathologists and speech therapists help patients improve their ability to swallow; relearn language and communication skills; and learn ways to improve memory and cope with reduced memory. At Brown University Health, we use clinical examination, instrumental technology, and standardized assessments to diagnose disorders and create treatment plans tailored to the patient’s needs. Patients who have suffered a stroke, brain injury, head and neck cancer, or who have neuromuscular disorders may require these services.
