Change to take effect Dec. 20; ED remains open and fully operational

Effective Dec. 20, the entrance to Newport Hospital’s emergency department will be temporarily relocated several yards to the right. The temporary entrance will still be accessed off the parking lot between Friendship Street and Powel Avenue, and will be well marked and illuminated. Ambulance traffic will be unaffected.

The change is necessitated by construction that is underway to enlarge and improve the emergency department. The ED remains open 24/7 and fully operational throughout construction.

Going forward, the emergency department entrance, accessed from the parking lot east of the hospital, will be limited to patients seeking emergency care. To enhance security and privacy, patients who are accustomed to passing through the emergency department to access other services at the hospital should now use the main entrance at 20 Powel Ave. or the entrance to the Borden-Carey Building. Vendors making deliveries must use the loading dock entrance on Friendship Street.

The $12.5 million emergency department construction project will nearly double the number of treatment and exam rooms, and will add features critical to keeping wait times low, improving patient comfort and privacy, and ensuring the best care for Aquidneck Island and surrounding communities.
