Exploring Autism: A Deep Dive

This presentation is designed to provide participants with up-to-date information on the neurodevelopmental characteristics of autism. This workshop is appropriate for those who are new to autism, as well as for those with decades of experience. Topics are broken down into the following categories: diagnostic criteria, coexisting medical conditions, social communication, sensory processing, and cognition. Participants will leave this workshop with a deeper understanding of the unique influence of neurodevelopment on each autistic individual. “Exploring Autism: A Deep Dive” celebrates autistic people while discussing the unique characteristics that require a supportive and empathetic environment.

Speakers

Ariana DeAngelis, MEd, is the training manager for The Autism Project (TAP) in Johnston, Rhode Island. With an undergraduate degree in developmental psychology and a master’s in special education (severe), DeAngelis worked as a teacher of autistic/neurodivergent students in Walpole and Malden, Massachusetts, and in Florence, Italy. While at The Autism Project, DeAngelis has transitioned the training team to the virtual platform, and brought TAP trainings to self-advocates, professionals, and parents across the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. In collaboration with autistic adults, professionals and family members, DeAngelis continues to write and deliver trainings focused on supporting neurodivergent people across the lifespan. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Recognize the characteristics of an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis & the impact on a person’s thought processes, responses to others, & subsequent actions.
• Describe how the neurologically based characteristics of autism present across the day.
• Define elopement & propose strategies to prevent it.
